What Else Have We Gotten Backwards?
What Psalm 65 Teaches Us About Letting the WORD Speak Louder Than The World
“Rain, rain, go away, come again another day…”
I have three daughters under five, and they’re learning the most upside-down songs. Another one is about a bear. At the end of the song, they sing, “Ah, run away!”—basically teaching little ones how to be chased and eaten by a bear. Oh, and to live fearing God’s creation.
Another classic?
“Ashes, ashes, we all fall down!”
That cheerful rhyme? It’s about the Black Plague that devastated Europe in the 14th century.
I know what some people think: They’re so young. They don’t understand.
But my four-year-old just quoted a whole Bible verse. She’s asked me about my mom dying. And she plays “mom” with babies in her belly.
Kids are absorbing everything.
The other day, my wife challenged our four-year-old: “Give me three reasons why I should help you clean up.”
She paused, then fired back:
“Because there’s a mess, because we usually work as a team, and because it’s hard.”
Mic drop.
Her little brain—like all of ours in those early years—is growing fast. By age three, a child’s brain is already 80% the size of an adult’s.
And that’s why this matters:
We’ve let the world disciple our kids with catchy jingles that disguise perverted truths. Lies wrapped in rhyme.
The Bible Saw This Coming
Isaiah 5:20 warned us:
“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil,
who put darkness for light and light for darkness.”
Jesus echoed this in Luke 16:15:
“What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight.”
The world is upside-down.
But the Kingdom of God? It’s right side up.
Rain and the Right Side Up Kingdom
Rain wasn’t just weather in the Bible. It was a visible sign of God’s blessing, favor, and provision.
Psalm 65:9 says:
“You care for the land and water it; you enrich it abundantly.”
David knew God didn’t water the earth randomly, but lovingly. In Deuteronomy 11:13–14, rain was promised as a reward for covenant obedience. And in 1 Kings 17, the absence of rain was a sign of judgment.
God uses rain to show He is near. That He provides. That He sees.
So why do we teach our kids to wish it away?
Upside Down vs. Right Side Up
I started jotting down some of the things the world has flipped—and what God actually says. I want my daughters to grow up knowing the truth. To love what God loves.
The world says: Rain is a nuisance
God says: Rain is a blessing from God
Psalm 65:9The world says: Children are a burden
God says: Children are a reward and inheritance
Psalm 127:3The world says: Silence is awkward
God says: Silence can be sacred and full of God's presence
Psalm 46:10The world says: Submission is weakness
God says: Submission is strength in God's design
Ephesians 5:21The world says: Sex is casual
God says: Sex is a sacred covenant blessing between husband and wife
Genesis 2:24, Hebrews 13:4The world says: Suffering should be avoided
God says: Suffering produces maturity, character, and deeper intimacy with Christ
Romans 5:3-5The world says: Obedience is restrictive
God says: Obedience brings freedom, blessing, and friendship with God
John 14:15The world says: Dependence is weakness
God says: Dependence on God is the greatest strength
2 Corinthians 12:9The world says: The first will win
God says: The last will be first in the Kingdom
Matthew 20:16The world says: You must prove yourself
God says: Your identity is a gift, not a performance
Matthew 3:17The world says: More is better
God says: God's "less" often leads to more eternal impact
Proverbs 15:16The world says: Power means control
God says: True greatness is found in serving others
Matthew 20:26The world says: Self is the center
God says: Christ is the center, and self must be crucified
Luke 9:23The world says: Death is the end
God says: Death is the doorway to eternal life for those in Christ
John 11:25
Flip the Script
It makes you wonder—what else have we gotten backwards?
We don’t need to curse the rain.
We need to see it.
We don’t need to avoid silence.
We need to enter it.
We don’t need to fear dependence.
We need to lean in.
God promised to restore sight to the blind, not just physically, but spiritually. The more we abide in Him, the more we begin to see what the world calls “normal” for what it is: upside down.
So here’s the challenge:
Never Finished Challenge: Flip The Script
Let the Word speak louder than the world.
Let the rain remind you:
God is still watering the earth. He is still present.
Instead of:
“Rain, rain, go away…”
We now sing:
“Rain, rain, come and stay,
Bring God’s goodness every day.”
Keep abiding. Read His Word. Let Him reshape how you see.
What does today say about God?
Heavenly Composer.
Even in short Psalms, He orchestrates music that transforms the soul.
He’s not just our King—He’s our Father, our Friend, our Shepherd.
What a Father.
What a King.
What a Friend.
Thank you, Jesus.
Ive been guilty my whole life of repeating worldly idioms like “ the world is yours.” No it’s Gods. I often pray for discernment and wisdom to seek Gods words over the worlds.
